Gomis Mta: Resort Above the Clouds

Gomis Mta is a high-altitude climatic resort in Guria, about 33 kilometres from Ozurgeti. Wooden summer houses dot the mountain slopes, and different parts of the resort sit at elevations of roughly 2,100 to 2,755 metres above sea level. The landscape brings together coniferous forests, alpine meadows and wide mountain views. When clouds settle below the ridge, the resort can feel as if it is floating above a sea of white. On a clear day, the Black Sea is visible in the distance. From central Batumi, the road runs through Ozurgeti before gradually climbing into the mountains. The scenery and air change along the way, from the coast and lowlands to the cooler highlands. The distance and drive time are estimates; the season and weather can affect travel conditions. Leave time for a walk and the views from the ridge. It can be cool even in summer, so bring warm clothing. Sunrise and sunset are especially memorable, as the changing light transforms the slopes and clouds.
